Shin pain

Shin pain or "shin splints" is a widely used term to describe conditions that are associated with pain in the lower leg. Often described as tenderness and aching in the lower leg along the inner side of the shin bone. Shin pain can be quite debilitating and keeping you from the activities that you enjoy.

Some causative factors are:
- Hard/uneven surfaces
- Increase in activity
- Flat feet
- Wrong footwear
- Tight muscles
- Stress fractures
- Biomechanical problems

If initial Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (R.I.C.E) has not settled the symptoms or you have ongoing shin pain it is advisable to contact a podiatrist. A podiatrist can pinpoint the causative factor, investigate the severity through radiological imaging and tailor a thorough treatment plan. Treatment may include strapping, exercise programs, footwear modification, dry needling, soft tissue mobilisation, custom orthotics, immobilisation with a moon boot and in some cases even surgery.
